These Top 10 Organization Tips from Chez Larsson may as well be the holy grail of home organization. There is no one size fix all remedy for home organization but many of these ideas can be tweaked to work for you.
1. Edit, edit edit.
Keep track of what you already have, get rid of what you don’t need. In other words, get rid of excess.
2) Let it go.
Don’t hold on to what you don’t need just because you already have it. Unused items are perfect for hand-me-downs between family members or donate the items to a local charity shop.
3) It’s only “stuff”.
Chances are you won’t regret what you got rid of.
“Considering the masses of stuff I constantly get rid of all the time I can only remember two things I’ve regretted. A few old letters I wish I’d kept and quite recently an Alvar Aalto Savoy vase which had a corner chipped off. I saw someone on AT cast a cement door stopper in one and wish I’d saved mine… But then again I have another one with a tiny chip so…”
5) One in – one out
When you buy something new get rid of something old.
6) Own what you love.
Don’t feel bad about displaying things that you love, not what people have given for you as a gift. Benita says just because someone gave you something doesn’t mean you have to display it or even keep it if it’s not your taste. In her home, her husband doesn’t always agree with all of her things and she doesn’t always agree with his choice, but she concludes, “at least someone in our household loves it.”
7) Buy storage in bulk.
Use boxes of the same color to hide clutter. Benita shops IKEA for all the same boxes. ” I must have about 25 Kassett and 40 Flaj by now… I print the labels on my printer for neatness.”
8) Corral your Clutter.
Keep your clutter more organized by keeping it together.
9) Rotate your collections.
You don’t have to have all your collectables out at once. Instead put some items in storage and display others for a less cluttered look.
10) Buy white.
White looks looks clean, fresh, opens up an area and isn’t distracting. Basically, white is perfect for a simple de-cluttered look and feel.

Unnecessary clutter can easily take over your environment if you’re not constantly monitoring what you already have. And the smaller the home or apartment the more susceptible to clutter these spaces are.
This is a great example as to how to reduce clutter in a highly visible area:

“The things we store on shelves aren’t always worthy of prominent display. When you want to put items under cover, a roller shade will do the trick nicely. Pick a reverse-roll shade in a color or pattern that will complement your decor, and have the merchant cut the shade to fit inside your bookcase. Use ceiling-mount brackets to install the shade on the underside of the shelf above. You can pull the shade down over one or several shelves at a time, depending on how many you want to hide.”
