If you’re a home owner, and even if you aren’t, you know that coordinating furniture is no easy task
There are so many things to keep track of like colors, color accents, furniture style, yadda yadda yadda. The list goes on. Where do even you begin?
You want furnishings that are stylish and durable in your home, but seriously, what about outside of it? When’s the last time you thought about your patio?
The patio area needs love too, and since it’s an outdoor space, designing this area can be tricky. It can also be a very functional area of your home if you plan it right. Contemplate the style of your home when planning your patio.
When it comes to patio furniture, the very first thing to consider is the material.
Select a material that suits your needs and consider the time and energy you’re able to put into maintaining it.
How to choose outdoor furniture is important to consider. House and Home has a great comprehensive guide that is great for any apartment dweller or home owner in the midst of deciding what kind of patio furniture is right for them. Considering this first prevents buying something you can’t commit to taking care of.
Included in this article are the four different categories of patio furniture material: wood, wicker, metal, plastic. Each category of material is broken down into subcategories of the different types of material. So, if you’re shopping for patio furniture check House and Home for proper maintenance.
After you’ve got your material choices squared away, next, you may be considering what kind of furniture to get. Choosing the right furniture is just as important as figuring out what kind of material.
Tip #1 Before you get all gung-ho and go shopping for patio furniture (which I know is really exciting) you need to really study the space you’re designing.
Consider these things:
- Determine the use of the space? Is it for dinner parties? Quiet mornings?
- How much sun does this space get?
- Will the furniture be on the grass or on the deck?
Answering these questions will help you determine what’s best for your space. For instance if your setup is in the grass, you might want to pick out lighter weight furniture or if your patio space receives a lot of sunlight you might want to pick something out with a lot of coverage, like a cabana or umberella.
Tip #2: It’s so important to measure out your space. Especially when buying a table or large furniture for your patio or deck.
Keep in mind that the chairs around a table take up an additional 24 inches of space. And then you’ll need an extra 24 to 36 inches from the back of the chairs to be able to walk around. Before you buy, go home with the furniture measurements and use chalk to draw the dimensions on your patio or deck to get an idea of whether it will all fit in the space.
Tip #3:Considering the materials of your furniture is one of the most important steps you can take when planning your patio (told you so).
Material is pretty much everything because you need it to be durable and still look good. Think about it, your patio furniture sits outside virtually all year in the sun.Common materials used for furniture:
Wrought Iron: This material is great because it’s indestructible. This material is heavy, so it’s not recommended for grass patios. But it’s very easy to maintain. Just wash it with warm soapy water before and after the summer season. If the paint does chip all it needs is a little touch-up.
Aluminum:Now, this stuff is great because it’s so light and doesn’t rust. The only negative aspect is that it won’t be as timeless as wrought iron.
Wicker: We love wicker furniture don’t we? I’m sure we can both agree, though, it doesn’t really last that long outdoors. It’s quite fragile. Some retailers sell resin wicker, which is wrapped around a steel or aluminum frame.
Pine & Cedar: These types of wood are more affordable, but with that they’re also softer.
Shorea, Mohogany & Teak: These are high quality and more expensive wood. All tend to be a harder more durable wood than pine and cedar.

This is a great example of simple and clean design. The white really makes everything feel light and airy. If you’re going for a more contemporary feel in your patio, these furnishings are a perfect place to start.
I love this set because it’s a bit more rustic and earthly. Wicker furniture can be difficult to preserve but this is so elegant it’s worth taking the chance. Wicker can also be kind of tacky but this collection is very sophisticated and classy.
This patio set is gorgeous for a nice quiet brunch or even a lavish brunch with your favorite group of friends. That’s how versatile this collection is. It’s fun, flirty, and also very sophisticated and tied together.
